How do you keep your browser bookmarks from becoming a mess?

I’ve ended up with hundreds of saved links that I keep telling myself I’ll come back to. Now it’s getting harder to find anything useful and I don’t really want another paid bookmarking tool just to organize them. Do you have a simple system or any built-in browser features that help you automatically clean up old bookmarks?

my simple rule is to delete anything I can’t imagine needing again. It feels harsh at first, but it makes finding the useful stuff much easier.
@kimberly_west Browser search helps more than I expected. I’d rather have a smaller bookmark collection that I can search quickly than maintain a complicated folder structure.

I just stopped telling myself, “I’ll watch/look into this later”) If I don’t have 5 minutes to check it out right now, then I won’t have time later either (in 90% of cases).
And that way, only the things that are truly important, interesting, and so on remain.
I usually keep only links that have a specific pupose. If I save something just because it looks interesting, there’s a good chance I’ll never open it again.
One thing that helped me was doing a cleanup whenever I notice myself searching through bookmarks for too long. That usually means the system has already become too messy.
