How do you evaluate unknown browser extensions when their permission list looks scary?

I was about to add a simple utility tool today, but stopped as soon as the browser warned it needed read/write access across every single website.

It makes sense for complex page tools, but for simple utilities giving up that much privacy just isn't worth it. I ended up uninstalling and doing the task manually instead.

What's your personal rule for trusting smaller, lesser-known extensions before giving them broad access?
