Sometimes it makes sense to provide a free version just to help users understand your product. For example team collaboration tools - you can't decide if it's good if you're on your own. Until you invite someone the product is useless. We're currently building a collaborative workspace and we provide our product for free for teams of two members. If the number of collaborators needs to be higher there's one-time payment fee.

Just don't do what Heroku did... Although they did get acquired for quite a bit... But also they had their free tiers immediately changed...
