Figma 3.0 - Styles, prototyping and design at scale

Hello hi. We’ve been working on Figma 3.0 for the last year, talking to hundreds of people to get this right. Our hope is that this new Styles and improved Prototyping functionality will help you build & maintain better design systems and make better decisions together. Design is a lot about communication, both with your fellow designers and other members of your team or clients. You could of course say “this view scrolls this way—just imagine what that’d feel like!” Or you can actually make it scrollable the way you intend it to and everyone will _see_ what you mean. Styles can similarly be used to help communicate how a design system is to be used, simplify decisions for other members of your team, or simply speed up your own workflow. We designed styles to work a little bit differently than what you may be used to from older tools: changes to a Style propagate immediately in real-time within the same document, just like changes to components. This may seem like a small detail, but it allows a whole new way of using styles for design iteration — before you know what path a design will take you, create a style or two and apply that to whatever you’re building. Pros:

The most powerful collaborative design experience I've ever seen. Lives in the browser. Where are your latest design files? On Figma.

Cons:

Slow to load files and prototypes is literally the only downside. Once the files load, everything is snappy.

First I was skeptical. A tool in the browser? Meh. But, after using it for a month and getting used to it now I see the whole potential of this. Keeping files in the cloud has huge benefits, especially with the whole saves history and versions. Also, the new styles are so cool and fast to use, really liking it so far. Big project infrastructure and organisation is so much easier. Thanks, Figma!

Pros:

Creating a library of styles and components that you can keep in a single file and use it across your whole project is a game changer.

Cons:

A bit slow to load.

Congrats! 🎉 Figma is incredible. Coming from Sketch, I'm impressed how better it actually is. Having a cross-platform cloud design tool really is priceless. Keep up the great work! 💪

Styles + new Team Library functionality for building design systems in Figma 🤤🤤🤤🤤

When we started Matter (https://matterapp.com), @JW suggested we use FIGMA to work together. At the time I had never heard of FIGMA and thought Sketch was still the hip app to use - Little did I know how much FIGMA would make the team's life better. Given our designer was distributed, using FIGMA to share files, discuss work-in-progress made everyone's lives easier and the team more productive. My only wish for FIGMA is a big performance increase and less demanding memory needs on my macbook pro.
