Burner - A low cost wallet to gift crypto

by
Burner is a small, secure computer that keeps your digital assets safe. It’s based on the same secure chips used in big, complicated and expensive hardware wallets. However, unlike hardware wallets, you don’t need to be a crypto expert to use it.

I’m one of the creators of Burner, a low cost Ethereum hardware wallet designed for gifting. After creating various forms of crypto “cash” (https://kong.cash/, https://offline.cash/) we learned that gifting cryptocurrencies was consistently one of the biggest challenges for holders and enthusiasts. Burner looks and feels like a colorful gift card, but under the hood it incorporates a secure element chip. You can access its wallet with just an NFC tap, and it works entirely through our (soon to be) open source web app.

I love the website's design, the card's deisng, and overall concept of Burner. My friend and I already ordered and are excited to explore how it works! From a safety standpoint, how do we make sure others that tap the NFC card aren't able to access our waller or run a script to try to guess our passcode? I'm curious how the security works here! Overall, love the direction. Congrats on the launch @digit & @ccamrobertson!

@gabe Thanks for the support! Regarding the safety question, a passcode is mandatory; if you fail with a passcode 20 times the card is permanently locked. We recommend backing up cards you plan to take with you incase you’re worried about losing it. Happy to answer anymore questions!

@digit I appreciate the response! So in theory - as long as we back up our wallet/private key we should be able to access the wallet regardless of card via the browser-based wallet, correct? Also any plans on supporting additional networks like Sui? I really love the design of the site and card - well done it had me like if there's a pink option - I'll probably order one of those next!
David Myers
@gabe The private key is non extractable from the chip by design, so no seed phrases. Burner does however allow you to duplicate your card securely to another Burner as backup.

Great job with the website and the design, love it! However, I have a few questions that are not answered on the website: 1) What happens if someone finds my burner card? Is there any way to freeze the funds or something? 2) What happens if I misplace the burner? Do I lose all of my funds as well? 3) What app do I use to load it? And how does it works? Do I need to buy the crypto from you, or simply transfer funds to that wallet address? 4) This is a crypto wallet so trust is a must. How can your users make sure that the cards are not being compromised by the manufacturer or someone else?

Hey there! 🎉 Congrats on the Burner launch! This wallet looks like a game-changer for crypto newbies. How do you keep costs so low while maintaining top-notch security?
David Myers
@ihuzaifashoukat Hey! We have a background in chips & manufacturing for many years prior to Burner, so we know how to create an inexpensive product without compromising on security. By using NFC it allows us to use a phone as the interface, and not needing to produce a screen, buttons, etc. That helps bring down excessive hardware costs.

@ihuzaifashoukat simple design + volume (we’ve been making secure NFC solutions for a while for other applications)
