I grew up filming EVERYTHING with my 8mm camcorder, clumsily editing them with my VHS player. Kids have it so easy now days. 😊

@rrhoover yeah they do. My school video projects back then would've looked like HBO documentaries nowadays.
Naveed Bagheri
@rrhoover so true! It would've looked like I spent a whole year on a class project with something like this or Showbox when in reality it could take less than a few minutes lol..
Jonathan
@rrhoover same here but we had cut/splice ( glue ) ;)

Tried this earlier today. For those familiar with Google Photo's "Magic Movie Maker" (for lack of a better name), it's pretty much that but better! You can either choose the videos and let the app do it's magic or take over with a very granular control and deep app. I was surprised at how good the app is at syncing transitions with the music.

GoPro has been evolving from a hardware company into a media brand. I'm curious where software -- apps that are technically independent from both -- fit into their overall strategy. @mthblt, @matthieurouif @im_yugs P.S. Nice write-up on The Verge by @sokane1.

Cool, making video editing simple is a necessity now. Can you imagine all the cool content around the world that can be produced with this kind of tool?! AWESOME!

@gabrielreynard Totally - the movie creation puzzle is finally piecing itself together! You should check out our take with actvt.com on it with just a pinch of creative control at the beginning of the process to help you focus on the story - while we automate the rest. And direct GoPro integration too :)

I haven't try it yet, is there some differences with the old replay app, or is it only a new branding ?
Jeff Boudier
@vnallatamby Biggest one is that everything is free now. A great new feature with Custom Video Duration : set your target duration, Quik reworks all the cuts in a snap. Another great addition is the new Slice video editing style, try it with text it's amazing. We also removed the Discover feed of user videos we featured.
Vincent Nallatamby
@jeffboudier great! excited to try it
Braden Hamm
@jeffboudier @vnallatamby do you mean free, except for the $15 in-app purchase?
Jeff Boudier
@bradenhamm no I mean free, as in there are no more in-app purchases
Steven Hambleton
@jeffboudier @bradenhamm App Store still lists the in-app purchases.

A strong (but predictable) step into the video-network space by GoPro. In terms of social video production/sharing, the market still feels open to me. Instagram and Facebook are seeing massive increases in video engagement, but it's mainly coming from top accounts/publishers, not your actual friends. This was a big inspiration for Hyperlapse and Boomerang - two products I worked on at Instagram. Make video production easier, so actual people do it. One huge barrier I see here is getting the videos from your GoPro to your phone. Unfortunately, it looks like you still have to go through the SD Card -> Computer -> Folder on Desktop -> Phone, rather than some sort of automatic syncing through the cloud. While it doesn't seem like a lot, it prevents in-the-moment impulse sharing. Which, in my experience, can significantly stunt the growth of a young network. As video recording gets better and better on phones (it's unreal on iPhone 6/6s), I wonder how much people are going to need to record with GoPros. Phones have a lot of advantages - immediate stabilization, filtering, editing, sharing. GoPro's main differentiators at this point are a) the waterproof/indestructible case and b) a nice wide-angle action lens. However, I can envision a phone-case that provides these two attributes for when you want to record action sports (think moment lens meets life-proof case). Might be a fun side project if anyone in the manufacturing world is interested :)

@telenardo great to get your opinion on this. I completely agree with your point on getting your videos from your GoPro onto your phone. It's almost not worth the effort, unless you're going for something clean and edited. It's too bad because GoPro was such a godsend for the action sports industry, but now after so many years it seems to have fallen behind when it comes to in-the-moment content sharing--and that's something they'll have to master if they want to be relevant to a wider market. That being said, the release of this app could be in anticipation of a Hero 5 device that has these capabilities.
Steven Hambleton
@telenardo iPhone 6/7 + Lifeproof case or a Samsung S7 Active would do the trick!
Tim Lenardo
@rueter Good point. Yeah, maybe the Hero 5 will have connectivity. It's a shame they don't have this on the ~50 million cameras they already have out in circulation though! I wonder how many people will upgrade?
Samuel Kraft
@telenardo The gopro app actually allows you to transfer all your videos directly from the camera via the built in wifi. I'd Love for this to be automated though - when connecting the camera over wifi it would be awesome to auto-sync all footage.
vincent galan
@telenardo Your analysis is spot on. GoPro is buying very cool apps, but that doesn't replace all the work that has to be done on the ecosystem.

The reviews in the app store shed light on the difficult transition from Replay > Quik. Still a very cool product and hope that GoPro goes far with it and listens closely to user feedback
Tweeter Hale
Giving it a try. Merge is running off my SD card in my phone and seems to be running fine. Look forward to testing this with actual Go Pro footage mixed with images and audio. Upvoted.

Time saver! ✌️ If there are many people like me who shoot a bunch of footage on the go pro but never find time to transfer files, edit, effects, sound... that will be really cool to see more go pro videos on social networks! 🏄
Collin Davis
I knew this app looked familiar. It's the old Replay app which was recently acquired by GoPro. The tech behind this is Stupeflix.
