Great application! Did a scan and realized there are things to improve on my dental care. Loved the video even though it is still really awkward to take the pictures. Really looking forward to see more from here such as help on setting up good routines! And booked my first dentist appointment in 10 years ! :)

I just downloaded and very happy with the results, But how do you detect dental cavities by taking smartphone selflies when sometimes dentist's can't even see it with xrays? i definitely see how this can be used for gum disease though, which many aren't aware they even have
Glad to hear that you was happy with the results and thank you for the question! First of all, it's worth emphasizing that the app doesn't make a "diagnosis" - that is the job for a dentist. But in a lot of cases caries can definitely be spotted on intraoral dental images ("selfies") from a smartphone – that said: NOT in all cases, and we don't claim to either. Regarding your question on specifically dental caries, the AI is trained to find changes in color, pattern, and structure on the teeth's surfaces. Assuming that the caries is only between two teeth (approximal caries), chances are that it won't be detected through visual signs whereas an X-ray will be necessary – but what we often see is that it might get detected if the user responds that they feel pain or sensitivity. However, our mission is to provide good dental health, and we believe in prevention and early intervention is key to obtain this. And through our app you can scan your teeth and get a 95% accurate answer, compared to an answer from a dentist – although that's of course not perfect, it goes a long way 🦷 Don't hesitate with any follow up questions! :-)

This is a really interesting use of ML. How good are the results? For example, reliability, validity, accuracy?
Thank you for your question! We are comparing the outcome of the scans with a dentist's outcome and opinion. This means we have as of this data spent more than 40.000 dentist hours reviewing and comparing, and the result is 95% accuracy when using our AI. What we also working on are clinical trials with Danish dentists to compare our detections against the "in chair" dental checkup. Results from this kind of clinical trial take time, but qualitatively we are seeing some amazingly interesting patterns emerge, for example how dentists start using the tool for pre-screening of gum conditions, surface caries and eligibility for orthodontic treatment 🦷
