Hey Product Hunt community
I'm Gene, a solo developer, and I'm launching SmartRolePath here soon. Before I do, I wanted to share the story and get your thoughts, since this community has shaped a lot of how I think about building in public.
A little over a month ago, I started building this after watching too many friends get laid off and freeze. Not because they weren't capable, but because they had no idea what their next move should actually be. The advice out there was either too generic ("just network more!") or too expensive (career coaching most people can't justify right after losing income).
Really like that the free tier includes a full career analysis instead of just a watered-down teaser, makes it way more useful than most tools like this. The live job posting integration across four APIs sounds like serious work for a solo build too.
@berfindang69225 Really appreciate that, thank you. The four API integration was honestly one of the trickier parts to get right, especially normalizing data formats across all of them into something consistent for the roadmap engine. Glad it's landing well.
How current is the salary data you pull from those job APIs, and does it factor in cost of living or just raw listed pay?
@beyzatav7 Great question. Salary data is pulled live from JSearch, Adzuna, and our other job sources, and refreshed daily, so you're seeing current market listings, not stale averages.
Right now it's raw listed pay as reported by employers, pulled from postings across the country. Cost of living adjustment isn't factored in yet, but it's a smart addition and something I'm considering for a future update, since the same salary number can mean very different things depending on where you live.
Appreciate you asking, this kind of feedback directly shapes what I prioritize next.
How current is the salary data you pull from those four APIs, and does it factor in location or remote roles when projecting timelines?
@farukjrew Good question,
The job and salary data comes live from four sources, JSearch, Adzuna, USAJobs, and Remotive, so it reflects current listings rather than a static dataset. Location and remote-role handling varies a bit depending on the source since each API structures that data differently, and I'm actively refining consistency across all four as part of ongoing development.
On cost-of-living adjustment specifically, that's not built in yet, salary figures reflect what's listed rather than a normalized regional adjustment. It's a good idea though, and one I'll think about adding down the line.
Appreciate you asking, questions like this are genuinely useful for figuring out what to prioritize next.
how does the AI actually pull from live job postings without the data getting stale pretty quickly between refreshes
@berilelyptz thank you for the great question.
Job listings are fetched live from four sources each time a search runs, so there's no long-lived server-side cache holding onto stale postings. On the client side there's a short-term cache (a few minutes) just to avoid re-fetching identical searches back to back, but beyond that, refreshing pulls current data straight from the source APIs.
Staleness is more of a source-level question at that point, some APIs update their listings faster than others, so freshness can vary slightly depending on which source a given result came from. That's an area I'm continuing to refine as I tighten up consistency across all four integrations.
The roadmap it generated for me actually lined up with skills I already have, which surprised me. The salary insights section was a nice touch too.
We just shipped three things we're genuinely excited about. First, a free career discovery quiz, no login required, that uses AI to match your actual interests and answers to real careers, then checks live job demand in your specific location before showing you results. Not another 8-question personality sorter. Second, a free career transition calculator for anyone who already has a target role in mind: it estimates realistic transition time, cost, and salary change based on your current situation. Third, SmartRolePath is now live in 12 countries, with localized job data and currency, not just a translated version of the US experience. All three came directly from people telling us they were stuck choosing a path, or stuck figuring out if switching was worth it. Would love your feedback, especially if you try the quiz and the result feels off or spot on.
