Reviewers largely see Shopify as the safe, easy way to launch and run an online store: setup is fast, the interface is intuitive, and its integrations, multichannel selling, and international tools are repeatedly praised. Shopify is one of those tools where you understand the hype the moment you actually use it. I set up a working store with products, checkout, and shipping in under 3 hours, and I'm not a developer. The theme editor is intuitive, the mobile preview works perfectly, and the fact that every plan comes with unlimited products and bandwidth means you're not constantly worrying about hitting limits as you grow. Shop Pay checkout is insanely smooth for customers too, our cart abandonment dropped noticeably after switching from a custom WooCommerce setup.

The catch everyone warns you about is real though: the actual cost of running a Shopify store is way higher than the subscription price suggests. Between the 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction on Basic, the apps you inevitably need (SEO tools, email marketing, reviews, loyalty programs), and the premium themes, you're easily paying $150-200/month on what's supposed to be a $39/month plan. And if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, they slap an extra 2% on top. That stings when your margins are thin.

For all that though, Shopify earns its spot. The app ecosystem with 6,000+ integrations means you can bolt on basically anything. Multichannel selling across your website, Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, and physical POS from one dashboard is genuinely seamless. And the international selling features with Shopify Markets make multi-currency and multi-language stores actually manageable without hiring a dev team. If you're serious about ecommerce and plan to scale, Shopify is the safest bet. Just go in with eyes open about the real total cost.

App dependency is Shopify's biggest weakness disguised as a strength. Too many features that should be native (proper email marketing, advanced SEO, subscription management, loyalty programs) require paid third-party apps at $20-50/month each. It adds up to a point where you're spending more on apps than on Shopify itself. Transaction fees for third-party payment gateways are also unnecessarily punitive.

The 2% surcharge on Basic feels like a penalty for not using Shopify Payments, which isn't even available in every country. And the new policy charging transaction fees on store credit and gift cards for stores created after May 2025 feels like nickel-and-diming loyal merchants. Shopify should be making its platform stickier through value, not through fee structures that punish flexibility

It is cool for all sizes of business, however, there is one significant concern from the payment perspective - Shopify creates a big challenge for the alternative payment methods to be listed in the Payment methods` list. The requirements for P-methods in order to open Shopify API for integration is quite too much, really to much. So if I have a local method that is not well-known in the world or does not process 10millions everyday - it is almost impossible to add it to my shop. Hope that Shopify team can review their strategy in this aspect as the rest tools and services are amazing. Looking for some updates.

The eCommerce platform for anyone - from solopreneurs and small and medium size businesses. Even many of the enterprises also run their commerce platforms on Shopify due to its simplicity, flexibility, and security for both the merchants and end-users (customers). I have been an eCommerce analyst and consultant for over a decade and have launched and migrated many online stores on many eCommerce platforms including Shopify, Magento, and WooCommerce; however, Shopify has been a number one choice for me and many of the merchants I work with.

This a really user-friendly platform for first time e-commerce creators. I really like the straight forward page builder and other tools. It can start to get pricey for all the different monthly subscriptions for the different essential and non-essential plug-ins depending on your stores need, etc. Otherwise, a really excellent platform!

Market-leading developer experience, especially when building headless stores using the Shopify Storefront API. There are still a few missing features and nitpicks, but nothing you can’t work around by a store-specific Shopify app and using a proper CMS for the frontend.
