Ryan Hoover
@eriktorenberg coming soon: product hunt double dates
Gary Macdonough
@eriktorenberg @rrhoover @kixton we have temporarily updated the site to be a bit more Product Hunt friendly! Haha hope you don't mind
Ryan Hoover
LOL! Well played, @gmacdoo.
Erik Torenberg
@rrhoover @kixton @gmacdoo just temporarily?? it's gold man.
Gary Macdonough
@rrhoover @kixton @eriktorenberg haha lets see how things go over the next couple of days! We will make it permanent if we hit 10k downloads ;)

There are a ton of Tinder for X's but this one makes sense. You could say it's a less scandalous version of 3nder.
Loren G
@rrhoover Thanks Ryan, glad you like it and yes we do like to think we're a bit more wholesome than 3nder.

Dunno I want to double with strangers. Hard enough to get together with the friend couples I already know.
Ryan Hoover
@sarahbuhr I'd generally prefer to go out with a couple close friends but like Grouper, this might be fun to try once or twice for the novelty at the very least.
Gary Macdonough
@sarahbuhr Sarah thanks for the comment. Double can be used a couple of different ways. Either two single friends join up together and create a joint profile or... a couple signs up to meet other couples. The choice is ultimately with the user depending on how they use the app and their app settings.
Ryan Hoover
@sarahbuhr @gmacdoo the couples use case is what makes this interesting to me.
Micah Baldwin
@rrhoover @sarahbuhr use case: want to connect/setup two friends but want to do it in a mellow way. I would call it the "lets get Erik a date" feature.
Ryan Hoover
@sarahbuhr @micah wish I could double upvote this comment.

Love this idea- I have spoken to a lot of friends who use apps like Tinder and Hinge, but still have reservations about actually meeting the person. Being able to bring along a friend might remove that last obstacle for many new online daters. How does one seed the app with enough users to start? I imagine for a dating app, the experience for users is heavily impacted the the availability of potential matches.
Gary Macdonough
@kunaltandon thanks for praise! Exactly, we had lots of friends who were in a similar predicament and this was the main inspiration for Double. Our early user acquisition strategy will be key to our success. We plan to promote Double city by city and gradually roll our across key locales so we have a concentrated userbase in focused areas. Our promotion strategy will include straight up street PRing, hosting Double parties, social media ads, media outreach etc. If you have any other ideas we would be more than happy to hear them? Thanks, Gary

Hi @imkialikethecar. Thanks for the questions. Long story but the short answer is Double was conceived after a few awkward Tinder dates in early 2014. We figured it would be more fun, less awkward and safer to go on a date with a friend. In terms of Grouper / Martini differentiation we are geared towards double dates. Four is a good number for a group dynamic which is social and still permits romance to blossom. Also the user has control of who and where they meet. Plus it is free. In terms of critical mass we are hard launching initially in London in time for Valentines Day and will roll out Double westwards across the USA thereafter. We have several user acquisition strategies lined up but please help us spread the word! Any further questions please don't hesitate to ask :) Gary

@gmacdoo one thing to take into account is countries where group dating is the accepted form of dating. India is a great example.
Loren G
@micah yes we have been looking into Asia and the subcontinent and hope to launch their soon. Do you have any specific research that shows double dating is popular in India? Thanks, Loren

@lozzagould Check out the rise and pivot of Ignightr (TS '08 - I think)
Loren G
@micah That is a great article. Thanks for sharing!!!
Gary Macdonough
@lozzagould @micah Micah thanks for the heads up. This article sums everything up pretty succinctly - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/2... Ignighter now seems to be Stepout which is interesting... looks like we might be moving to Mumbai shortly then!
Darren J Smith
I've added it to my "For Couples" collection... Swapping is the future ;) http://www.producthunt.com/darre...

@darrenux Thanks Darren!

Hi guys, I'm Loren, co-founder of Double. Feel free to ask me anything
Kia K.
@lozzagould Hi there! So how did the app come about? how is it different from Martini/Grouper (besides being only 2 people instead of 3)? how do will you get that critical mass of users needed for dating apps to really work?
Gary Macdonough
@lozzagould @imkialikethecar See response below :)
