When does a spreadsheet stop being the right tool for a growing team?

Spreadsheets often begin as the simplest and most flexible way to organise work. They are familiar, quick to set up and easy to adapt as processes change.

The problem is that the transition from “useful spreadsheet” to “operational bottleneck” rarely happens all at once. It usually appears through smaller warning signs:

• Multiple versions of the same sheet start circulating

• Team members overwrite or duplicate each other’s work

• Reports require repeated manual updates

• Important processes depend on one person understanding the setup

• The sheet becomes slower as more rows, formulas and attachments are added

• Access permissions become difficult to manage

• Moving to another platform feels more disruptive than continuing with the current system

While working on Wisegrid.co, our team has been exploring an important question: do growing teams really want to leave spreadsheets, or do they simply want the spreadsheet experience to become more scalable, collaborative and reliable?

Wisegrid is being built around the second possibility. The goal is to preserve familiar rows, columns and formulas while adding features such as dashboards, automations, structured permissions, conflict-aware collaboration and easier migration.
