Volition - A self-hosted daily planner that focuses on reflection

Volition is more than a todo list. It’s a framework for becoming more effective. It encourages you be more intentional in planning your day and reflecting on the decisions you made.

Kinda cool. Paid, though...
Flowsion
@andrew_bergson It's $1 a month or free if you self-host.

@andrew_bergson If you don't find it useful enough for $1 a month then either you have strange expectations about the world and sustainability or it's just not that great.

@andrew_bergson I understand the hesitation to pay for yet another piece of software. I chose to offer a self-hosted version for this reason. My goal with charging for the hosted service is to be able to pay the server costs and hopefully fund future development. If it's not worth it to you to pay or self-host Volition, no hard feelings!

@andrew_bergson @garrettqmartin - you should honestly charge for this. around $20 a year seems fine to me.

Hi everyone! @rohitpaulk thanks for posting Volition! I've been working on Volition little by little over the past year and I'm really excited to see that there is demand for a product like this. I am working on fixing up some little bugs and thinking about the roadmap. If you decide to try Volition and are technically inclined, please create an issue on Github for any bugs or issues you run into.

@garrettqmartin - my little list of stuff because github is too complicated for me. 1. being able to see what i wrote yesterday and what tasks i completed 2. plan for tomorrow today (after my reflective moment of course).

@garrettqmartin also, when i hit the submit button on the settings page nothing happens, which means many things, including that payment processing might be an issue

I have finally found the to-do list that I have been looking for. I have thought about making something like this myself as I've wanted that much. Now, I don't have to!

Pros:

Keeps me on track. I've been looking for an app like this for over a year.

Cons:

Nothing exactly like this in app form as far as I know. The Productivity Planner is a paper version.

I actually really like the idea of assigning an estimate of time to simple To-Do tasks and easily limiting how many you can fit into a single day. That's the one thing missing in the To-Dos apps I use now.

Love that this has a self-hosted version. We need more apps like this!

This might be the simplest to do app plus pomodoro ever. I like it lots.

So have you got that task list with five levels of nested sub tasks? Or do you have a huge backlog on that Kanban board? Go on take a second and admit you Imay) have a a problem. I have. Because of this I am experimenting with productivity systems. It is not the first time, nor will it be the last. In looking at lots of apps and approaches, Volition stands out for three reasons. 1. It has a light weight Promodoro estimates. Fancy way of saying estimate how many 25 minutes increments soemthing will take. 2. It has a task list that links to estimates of time. Does your to do app do that? 3. There is a reflective space, a daily journal. You could literally move from data crunching time activities to reflecting on the meaning of time in a snap. Awesome. But, this still at a very early stage. So there are issues with the application. Some are easily flexible, like enusuring that users have access to all pages in the app, and ensuring that the payment system actually works and an easy path to reset passwords. I like the app, and hope these issues are resolved. The biggest challenge for this app is an odd one - people seem willing to pay, but the developer is reticent to charge. I interpret that to mean that this is the right guy building the app, and hope he gets someone on board to sort out the business side. I wish the developer all the luck, and in case you wondering I have had three really productive days - partly because Violition exists, and partly because I have a deadline approaching. I have not attempted to selfhost the app, as it would be way to complex for me, so I cannot comment on that.

Pros:

Simple way to link tasks, time. and thoughts.

Cons:

Experimental state
