I test-restored my backup for the first time. One table came back with 0 of 4,698 rows.
I run a few apps on one VPS: Coolify and three self-hosted Supabase databases.
This week I set up proper backups and, for the first time, tested one by restoring it into an empty database and comparing every table.
The copy itself looked fine. The restore didn't:
- 164 of 166 tables matched
- 2 tables came back empty, one missing all 4,698 rows
- All three databases failed on the same two tables
Postgres refused the rows because of a check constraint. The copy gave no sign of it. I would have found out on the worst possible day.
I'm still fixing it, but at least now I know.
AI gets an app live in an afternoon. Nobody tells you to check this part.
So, for anyone shipping with AI:
1. Have you ever actually restored a backup of your app, or are you trusting that it's there?
2. What worries you most after launch: backups, security, costs, or something else?
I found this while building Unit 7, a self-hosted tool that looks after servers for people who ship with AI. It launches here soon, and your answers will shape what it checks first.
