Why Is Hiring in Film & Music Still So Fragmented?

I’ve grown up around friends and family who work in the film industry, and one pattern keeps repeating:

  • Most opportunities come through referrals, inner circles, or personal networks.

  • If you’re outside that circle, it’s extremely hard to even get visibility, no matter how talented you are.

  • At the same time, production teams often struggle to quickly find reliable, verified talent without going through layers of informal connections.

From your experience:
• Is this just how the industry works?
• Or is there room for a more structured, transparent system?
• What’s the biggest hiring friction you’ve personally faced?
