The "DeGoogle Your Life" Starter Pack (and why we built anon.li)

by

Hey Product Hunt community!

It feels like every week we’re seeing a new thread about aggressive data tracking, targeted ads getting too smart, or another massive corporate data breach. Because of this, a lot of makers and early adopters are actively trying to "DeGoogle" their lives - but fully taking the plunge can feel incredibly overwhelming.

As privacy advocates, we wanted to share a quick and painless "starter pack" for taking back control of your digital footprint:

Search: Swap out Google for DuckDuckGo or Brave Search (excellent search quality without the tracking).

Browser: Ditch Chrome. Brave, Firefox, or Mullvad Browser are fantastic privacy-first alternatives.

Drive / Storage: Check out Proton Drive or self-host your own Nextcloud instance. For end-to-end encrypted file sharing use anon.li Drop (share up to 250GB with AES-256 encryption).

Maps: Try OsmAnd or Organic Maps (open-source, offline, and highly detailed).

Email & Identity: This is where things get tricky. Using one main email address everywhere means a single data breach compromises your identity across the web. That's exactly why we built anon.li. Swap out Gmail for Proton Mail or Tuta and use anon.li Alias to hide your real email address.

We realized there needed to be a friction-less privacy layer for your everyday digital life. With anon.li Alias, you can instantly create anonymous email aliases to hide your real address from newsletters, spam, and trackers, as well as share files using anon.li Drop with true End-to-End Encryption. We operate on a simple motto: Privacy by Default. Not by Request.

We’d love to open this up to the PH community:

  1. Have you tried to DeGoogle your life? What was the hardest app or service to replace? (For us, it was definitely Google Maps!).

  2. What are your absolute favorite privacy tools right now?

Drop your thoughts below - we're always looking for new privacy tools to add to our stack!
