Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot), along with members of PleasrDAO and artist Trippy Labs, are selling 10,000 Ukrainian flag NFTs with plans to donate all proceeds to the Come Back Alive Foundation, which supports Ukraine’s military, and the Proliska NGO.

I guess I don't quite understand why this needs to be an NFT rather than just a donation

It probably doesn't have to be an NFT. That being said, it taps into the energy around web3 and also some psychological reward center for people who want to "show their receipts" for social validation. They also have the ENS domain for folks that want to send money without the NFT.
