Tipword v0.9.59: fixed words not translating sometimes

Hey all, spent today chasing a bug where Tipword would sometimes just do nothing when you hover a word. Some of you probably hit it. It was random and hard to catch, but I think I got it.

What’s fixed:

  • Chrome: words inside scrollable areas (like Gmail or chat apps) didn’t translate at all. They do now

  • Chrome: sometimes it translated the first word of the line instead of the word under your pointer. Fixed

  • Buttons and labels with more than one word now translate the word you’re actually pointing at, not the whole label

  • The language picker closed by itself right after a fresh launch. It stays open now

Also new: if a word still doesn’t translate, open the menu and use Report a problem. It sends me a small report on what happened (which app, and why it failed), so I can fix it much faster. Before, that button just opened an empty email.

Update from the menu bar, or grab it at

If anything still feels off, comment here or email . I’m fixing stuff as fast as it comes in.

Thanks for finding this out! that hover problem was getting on my nerves a little, particularly in Gmail so the fix for the positioning and scrollable area translation is big. and another thing I love about the new Report a problem upgrade so much easier than having to manually email when something goes wrong. Updating now

 Thanks Nabeel, appreciate it!

For the multi-word buttons and labels, does it pick the word under the pointer even on small text? Or does it work better on bigger text??

Works fine on small text. As long as the text is a normal readable size, it picks the word under your pointer. Very large text isn't supported yet. To read a word, Tipword captures the area around your pointer and runs OCR on it. The bigger the text, the bigger that image has to be, and processing large images on every hover gets too heavy on your Mac.
