Hi PH I'm Hera, building soloviy, a free dictionary of how Ukrainian is actually spoken. Anyone can add a word from their family and pin it to the place it comes from. We're at 18,000 words and 28,208 places on the map of Ukraine.
What keeps surprising me is how local it gets. A potato is bulba in one village, barabolia in the next, krumpli in Zakarpattia. For mashed potatoes alone we've collected 89 different words.
So, whatever language you speak: what's a word your family or your region uses that people 50 km away wouldn't understand? And is anyone collecting these for your language, or is it quietly disappearing the same way?
One more thing I'd like an honest answer to: would you actually explore a language through a map, or does that just make for a nice screenshot?
