soloviy is an open platform for the Ukrainian language. A free, community-built dictionary of dialects, surzhyk and slang — 18,000 words with meanings and real examples, and 28,208 places on the map across 27 regions, with a public API and iOS/Android apps. On the same base we run exam prep for students: 134 lessons, 18 free.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm Hera, founder of soloviy. Ukrainian changes from village to village. A potato is bulba in one place, barabolia in the next, krumpli in Zakarpattia. Academic dictionaries are closed, paid and slow, so this living layer of the language is quietly disappearing with the older generations. We're building the open infrastructure for it. Two things live on the same base today: The dictionary — free and community-built. Anyone can add a word from their family and pin it to the place it comes from; every submission is reviewed before it goes live. 18,000 words with meanings and real examples, 28,208 places on the map across 27 regions, a public API with no key, iOS and Android apps. Exam prep — 134 lessons for students preparing for the national university entrance exam (NMT), 18 of them free. Theory, timed tests in the real exam format, and a review of every mistake. Same app, same audience, and the part that pays for the free half. What comes next: the course covers Ukrainian today, and the exam has other subjects — the same lessons-tests-mistakes machine works for all of them, so we're building out full exam prep. Alongside it, more of the language as something you play with rather than study: interactive games and short courses, free and paid. And a proper community around the dictionary, because the words come from people, not from us. None of this is specific to Ukrainian, either. Plenty of languages have the same disappearing layer and no one collecting it. We're a team of three. What would make you want to explore a language through a map? We mapped 18,000 Ukrainian dialect words. What's a word only your region uses?

Hi PH I'm Hera, building soloviy, a free dictionary of how Ukrainian is actually spoken. Anyone can add a word from their family and pin it to the place it comes from. We're at 18,000 words and 28,208 places on the map of Ukraine.

What keeps surprising me is how local it gets. A potato is bulba in one village, barabolia in the next, krumpli in Zakarpattia. For mashed potatoes alone we've collected 89 different words.

So, whatever language you speak: what's a word your family or your region uses that people 50 km away wouldn't understand? And is anyone collecting these for your language, or is it quietly disappearing the same way?

One more thing I'd like an honest answer to: would you actually explore a language through a map, or does that just make for a nice screenshot?
