Why I decided to create a free and unlimited Israeli invoicing service

by

I opened a business in Israel and went looking for something to issue invoices with. What I found was a market where the parts that make a document legally valid are sold as an upgrade.

Israel does not let you email a PDF and call it an invoice. Every document needs a running number with no gaps. It has to be digitally signed at the moment of issue. Since 2026, any tax invoice above 5,000 shekels pre-VAT needs an allocation number pulled from the Tax Authority in real time, and without one your customer cannot deduct the input VAT.

That threshold drops in stages, so the share of invoices that need it grows every year. At the end of the year your accountant wants an Open Format export, a specific INI plus BKMVDATA file, not a spreadsheet.

None of that is an advanced feature. It is the minimum the law asks of anyone issuing three invoices a month.

Here is what the free plans actually offer. One caps you at a few dozen documents a year, and switches to a subscription the moment you pass it, which is exactly when the business starts working. Another is a 30 day trial, which is a deferred payment rather than a free system, because anyone who moved their books in during that month is no longer really choosing at the end of it. The third kind keeps the Israel Invoice connection on the top plan only. That one is the sharpest, because above the threshold you cannot work without it. A paid plan with a free landing page.

Then there is the small print. Prices shown per month and billed a year in advance, so leaving costs money. Quotas that count quotes and delivery notes alongside invoices, so the cap arrives sooner than you worked out. Systems that export to Excel but not Open Format, which leaves the translation as manual work, usually done at the accountant and billed by the hour.

So I built the thing I wanted to exist that week. Unlimited documents, unlimited businesses, digital signing, the Israel Invoice connection, VAT reports and Open Format export. No cost, no credit card at registration, no document cap.

Some of the decisions inside it:

Signing happens on our server at the moment of issue. No smart card, no plugin, nothing to install. A signed document locks, and a correction goes through a credit note the way the law wants.

Numbering is held server side, so you can issue from a laptop and a phone on the same day without producing two sequences.

When the Tax Authority service does not answer, and it does not always answer, the issue still goes through. From the document you can retry under the same identifier, record that you are continuing without a number, or file an objection. Whatever you choose is logged and reported back, and stays flagged until it is. This failure path is the part I spent the most time on and the part nobody demos.

Registration asks for your business type, and from then on you only see the documents you are allowed to issue. An exempt dealer never sees a tax invoice option, because an exempt dealer who issues one has charged tax they were not entitled to charge.
