Residential vs datacenter proxies — when to use each
One of the most common questions I see from teams building data pipelines: "Should I use residential or datacenter proxies?" The answer isn't one or the other — it's knowing when to use each. Here's a framework that's saved us a lot of wasted spend.
1. Start with datacenter, escalate to residential
Datacenter proxies are 3–4× faster and significantly cheaper. Test 100 requests against your target with datacenter IPs first. If your success rate stays above 95%, stop there. Only bring in residential for the requests that actually fail. This hybrid approach keeps costs low without sacrificing reliability.
2. Residential for protected targets, datacenter for everything else
Industry data consistently shows residential proxies maintain 95–99% success rates on protected domains, compared to 40–60% for datacenter IPs. But for public data, open APIs, or low-security targets, datacenter proxies handle the load just fine at a fraction of the cost.
3. Match proxy type to the job's identity requirements
Authentication flows, account creation, and multi-step workflows typically require cleaner identity signals. Residential IPs look like real households because they come from actual ISP-assigned addresses. Datacenter IPs are fine for read-only, stateless scraping where session persistence isn't required.
4. Don't pay residential rates for datacenter work
This sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many teams default to residential for everything "just to be safe." You'll pay 3× the cost for traffic that a datacenter pool would have handled perfectly fine. Be intentional about which proxy type you use for which job.
