I realized passive AI tools were degrading my writing skills. Anyone else?
Hello Product Hunt community! π
I want to share a personal realization that completely changed how I look at productivity and AI software.
For months, I fell into a lazy routine: instead of actually writing my own emails or reports, I would just type a brief, one-sentence prompt into a cloud LLM and let it generate the entire text from scratch for me. I would then copy-paste the output without a second thought. It felt like peak efficiency.
But a few months ago, I noticed something alarming. Whenever I had to write an urgent message from my phone without an AI tab open, I started to hesitate. My active vocabulary felt rusty, and I realized I was losing my writing confidence.
It brought me to a harsh truth: AI is making us fluent in copy-paste, not in language.
The "Pilot" vs. the "Mentor" Problem π€
The real issue with traditional AI tools is that they write instead of you. They take the controls, replace your voice entirely, and fly the plane. Your brain gets zero mental engagement, and you learn absolutely nothing from the transaction. Over time, outsourcing your thinking like this actually degrades your independent writing skills.
I didn't want an AI that replaces my words. I wanted an AI Coach and Mentor. A tool where you do the writing, but the AI actively guides you, refines your style, and tells you why a correction is better so you can permanently level up.
Turning the problem into a personal project π οΈ
To scratch my own itch and avoid constant browser tab-switching, I started coding a native Windows tool that would act exactly like that mentor. I wanted something triggered by a simple shortcut (`Ctrl+Alt+C`) right where I was already typing, showing a side-by-side comparison with an educational feedback panel explaining the stylistic choices.
That personal utility eventually evolved into LinguaPilot AI.
With the recent v2.6 update, it grew into a flexible hybrid engine (supporting both cloud and 100% offline local models like Ollama for strict privacy). I also added a bilingual coaching feature tailored for non-native speakers: you can write in one language (like English) and receive the grammatical explanations in your native tongue (like French) to accelerate real learning.
Iβm really curious to get your take on this:
Have you noticed a slight degradation or a loss of confidence in your independent writing skills since relying on LLMs to generate your texts daily?
If you are a Windows user and want to test this alternative approach, feel free to check out the project (a permanent free trial is available):

This really resonated with me. I've found that using AI for brainstorming, reviewing, or refining my writing helps me learn much more than asking it to generate everything from scratch. The mentor approach feels like a healthier long-term direction.
@kartikbatchu2003Β Spot on! This is exactly why I started this project. When AI does all the work from scratch, our own writing skills naturally get weak. Using it to improve and explain keeps us in control. Thank you for the support-it means a lot to see others prioritizing long-term writing confidence!
