Safelight:Photo Vault & Search - Photo vault + offline AI search. No internet permission

by•
Photo apps make you choose: upload your library, or lock photos into a folder you can never search again. Safelight does neither. Photos go into an AES-256 vault unlocked by PIN or fingerprint, and you find them by describing them — "passport", "the whiteboard" — because the model runs on the phone. The app requests no INTERNET permission at all. Sharing strips GPS and EXIF without re-encoding: a receipt for an accountant, a listing photo for a buyer. Free, no ads, no account, no sync.

Every photo vault I tried had the same hole: it could hide things, but then I could not find them. And every app that could search my library wanted it on a server first. I build Android apps for a living — ten years at large internet companies, eight of them shipping my own — and I wanted both halves in one app. Safelight puts photos in an AES-256 vault unlocked by PIN or fingerprint. Search runs on the phone on a bundled model, so "receipt" or "the whiteboard" finds the shot without a tag ever being written. The vault gets its own encrypted index that loads only while the vault is unlocked, so hidden photos stay findable without the index announcing what is inside. The claim I care most about is a negative one: the app requests no INTERNET permission at all. You can check it in Android's app info instead of taking my word for it. What it does not do, so nothing surprises you: face blurring and text redaction are still in development and are not in this version. There is no cloud backup and no password reset — lose the phone and the 16-character recovery code and the vault is gone. No iOS, no sync, no account. It is a GPL-3.0 derivative of Simple Gallery, and the source is public on Codeberg. What would you put in first — ID documents, or family photos?
