Why I built a "Google Docs for eBooks" to solve the indie author’s biggest headache
If you’ve ever written a book (or even a long-form guide), you know the "Review Hell."
You finish your manuscript in Markdown or Word. You export a PDF. You email it to 5 friends. Then the chaos begins:
Friend A sends back a list of typos in a separate email.
Friend B uses the "Comment" feature in Acrobat (which is a nightmare to export).
Friend C just says "it looks good" but doesn't tell you where it looks good.
When I started building Pressdown, I realized that converting Markdown to a beautiful PDF was only half the battle. The real friction happens during the proofreading phase.
The Solution: Pressdown Review Mode
I decided to build a dedicated collaborative module that feels like Google Docs but works directly on the final, paginated book layout. Here’s how it works:
Instant Shareable Links: One click generates a secure, private URL for your beta readers. No more sending huge attachments.
Live Paginated Preview: Reviewers see the book exactly as it will look in print or on an eReader (powered by our rendering engine).
Contextual Highlighting: Reviewers simply select a sentence and leave a comment. As an author, you see exactly which line they are talking about.
Privacy First: You can password-protect links and see exactly how many people have actually opened your manuscript (thanks to some new analytics I just integrated).
The "Aha!" Moment
The feedback from early users was immediate: “I finally feel like a professional publisher.”
By giving reviewers a beautiful, distraction-free environment to read in, authors are getting 3x more actionable feedback. It turns out that when the reading experience is premium, the reviewing quality follows.
What’s Next?
I’m currently refining the "Review to Editor" sync, so authors can apply suggested changes with a single click.
I'd love to hear from other SaaS builders: How do you handle collaborative feedback in your apps? Do you stick to standard tools like Intercom/Email, or have you built something custom to match your workflow?
