Does anyone else physically unplug their MacBook at 80% to save battery life?
I’ve been obsessing over my MacBook’s battery health lately, specifically the "20-80% rule."
I know there are apps like AlDente that limit charging via software, but I always felt better actually cutting the power at the wall. For the last few weeks, I’ve been manually toggling my desk’s Alexa smart plug every time I hit 80%. It’s a tiny task, but it’s a constant mental tax.
I’m currently finishing up a small macOS utility (PlugPilot) that automates this. It talks to Alexa-compatible plugs and kills the power automatically when you hit your threshold, then kicks it back on at 20%.
Before I ship the first version, I’m curious:
How many of you actually care about the 80% rule, or do you just "plug and forget"?
If you use a smart plug for your desk, would you trust an app to toggle it for you?
Are there any specific "smart" features (like bypass mode for long renders) that you’d want in something like this?
I’m planning to open-source it next week. If this sounds like something you’d actually use, let me know—I’d love to get a few early testers to make sure the Alexa integration is solid across different regions.
