I built pixelbeads because I wanted a free, fast way to turn any image into a printable bead pattern without sign-ups or storage concerns. The process evolved to prioritize simplicity and privacy, ensuring crafters can focus on creating.

The auto color optimization is genuinely clever, especially how it balances matching the original photo against keeping the bead count manageable for a real project.

The color optimization looks incredibly thoughtful, especially how it clusters similar shades together to minimize how many different bead colors you need to buy. That kind of practicality usually only comes from people who have actually completed a few perler projects themselves.

Took a quick spin with PixelBeads and the auto color optimization actually picked a pretty reasonable palette from a chaotic family photo. Grid preview was easy to tweak before exporting, which saved me from printing a mess.

How many beads come included with each pattern, or do I need to buy them separately?

The patterns are digital downloads, so physical beads are not included. Each pattern does include the estimated total bead count and a color-by-color quantity breakdown, so you’ll know exactly what you need before starting your project. We’re also exploring ways to make the material planning and shopping process easier in the future.

How does the color optimization handle images with gradients or lots of subtle shading? Does it snap to a fixed palette or can you upload a custom one to match what you actually have on hand?

Great question. For images with gradients or subtle shading, our color optimization analyzes the image and groups visually similar shades before mapping them to the selected bead palette. The goal is to preserve the important visual structure and tonal transitions while keeping the number of bead colors practical for a real project.

Currently, the conversion uses our predefined bead palettes rather than an uploaded custom palette. Custom palettes are something we’re considering, especially for makers who already have a specific set of beads on hand.

The color optimization is genuinely impressive, way beyond what I expected from a free tool. Honestly my bathroom counter has never looked so productive.
