I haven't had a chance to use 'Peace' yet, but it’s powered by Ghostery, Ghostery is still owned by a company (Evidon) that collects and sells data to advertisers.
@brandonjgeo Albeit not in quite the same way as some of its peers - the developer of peace puts it as:
"Ghostery’s business model is often misunderstood. The gist of it: their browser plugin has an opt-in feature, off by default, to send Ghostery anonymous data about which third-party scripts get loaded on the pages people visit. This helps them find new trackers to block, and they offer a business version of Ghostery that big sites use to figure out which trackers people see on their sites. Third-party ad networks and analytics are so common, and their standards for embedded ads are so unenforceable (since they’re letting third parties execute arbitrary code), that web publishers need someone else — Ghostery — to tell them what’s being served on their own sites and what problems it might be causing for their visitors or potential customers."
Marco: "Peace required that all ads be treated the same — all-or-nothing enforcement for decisions that aren’t black and white. This approach is too blunt, and Ghostery and I have both decided that it doesn’t serve our goals or beliefs well enough. If we’re going to effect positive change overall, a more nuanced, complex approach is required than what I can bring in a simple iOS app."
Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my iPhone 6S with its 64-bit processor so I can give this a go. I'm curious why Apple is limiting Content Blockers to newer devices. Whatever the case, the consistent quality of Marco's apps, along with Ghostery for the filters leads me to believe this is going to be a good solution.
Hopefully publishers will figure out that loading up on trackers, ads and popup garbage isn't the way to monetize their content. Wondering how Google might respond to this in Android given their dependance on ad revenues in their other lines of business.
@edoam Two solutions:
a) For a quick fix, long-tap the refresh icon, then select "Reload Without Content Blockers".
b) For a more permanent solution, you can whitelist any websites that break within Peace's settings.
Bought and installed. I'm a (recovering) tabaholic, and have always had serious performance issues on Chrome for iPhone and (especially) iPad. I've also been anti-Safari for a while, but the contrarian in me has been wanting to start using it, so Peace is a great excuse to start doing that. Sorry Google...
Also, you gotta know that a Marco Arment app is going to be useful, after the original Instapaper and Overcast. Thanks Marco!
