Otherweb - A smarter way to be informed

Read the news, discover podcasts and search the web - without clickbait, eye catchers, auto playing videos, paywalls, partisan echo-chambers, or whatever else digital marketers can come up with next.

You say it's free and ad-free. How do you make money?
for now, we don't. Over time we will likely add some advertising to the search results page - so the main features (news, podcasts etc) will remain ad-free, but search results would look similar to what they look like on any search engine.
Thank you!
we really appreciate your support! As a token of appreciation, we want to offer you a special bonus - besides web and mobile, you can also consume the Otherweb as a free newsletter: ; it's a daily selection of the top-10 articles of the day, sent to you each morning. Cheers!
Can I make your search engine the default in my browser? It has decent results and no ads.
for the time being no - but you can search within the app without typing - just highlight any phrase and search. It works better than regular search engines because we have the full context of what you were reading when you initiated the search, too.

Congratulations on the launch ! Information without the usual clutter is quite necessary these days.
thanks Arnab! Indeed, I personally can't consume the news any other way anymore, it's all too.. LOUD. So to some extent this product was done for me. I wanted to read the news and stay calm.

The interface looks great. Reminiscient of Google Reader. I wonder if this is on purpose?
hi Aida, it is - I was a big fan of google reader before it was discontinued, so we are trying to bring back the same vibe. Text-only, scroll and speed-read.
Thank you!

Congratulations This is rights, I really like the product but since I do most of my news consumption on the go,was really missing the mobile app experience, as much as the web version was already optimized for mobile , I still prefer the app experience. Now the main question is how can I make it replace my default news source (Google news suggestions on android). Just swiping right in the launcher when I have free time for news is much easier than remembering which app, locating and launching it. For now, we don't. Over time we will likely add some advertising to the search results page - so the main features (news, podcasts etc) will remain ad-free, but search results would look similar to what they look like on any search engine.
thanks Farhad!

Love Otherweb! I jump on here all the time to get news without the BS. It's awesome - looking forward to checking out the app. Great stuff Alex!
thanks Seb! Would love to hear your feedback on the app itself, I always trust your judgment.
I like your product. great idea, very admirable mission and vision. I'm impressed with all these features and Love the simplicity of the product, very neat. Congrats on the launch, Wish you all the best!
thanks Abdelrazek!
Thank you, I've been playing with it already. maybe let users w/o creating an account first?
we've tried that with the website, and the result was that quite a few users used it without registering, and then some of them complained their settings aren't synchronized across devices and their podcast subscription list is empty :) So our conclusion for now is to follow basically - if we know the UX is much better for registered users, we should require all users to register.
i see. got it.
i don't pretend to know the answer on this one :) We just know the opposite approach didn't work well so far, so.. we decided to listen to Andrew Chen and see what happens.
:))))) Fair enough. Keep trying!
Thank you!
A clear and direct flow of news, with a set of filters to combat the cruft. This restores my hope in the internet's ability to enable a more connected and informed society.
thanks Jesse!
