Google Duplex - An AI assisstant that can talk on the phone 🤖

by

Google Duplex is an AI assistant that can actually talk to humans to get what you need. Powered by Google's powerful AI and tucked into Google Assistant, you'll be able to book reservations and schedule haircuts at hundreds of thousands of restaurants in seconds. More features to come soon.

Admittedly, this is pretty cool. But if I'm on the side of the small business owner, it feels pretty weird not being able to tell if I'm talking to a human or AI. Eventually I could see Google Duplex providing this service for the small businesses themselves. So then we have our personal AI assistant talking to business AI assistants, dictating where and when we get our hair cuts, eat our meals, go to the doctor, etc., with Google "monitoring every call for quality assurance." Will it make our lives easier? Probably. But is that really a world we want to live in?

This could be a fantastic tool for people working on online directories like me. Can’t wait for the API options to be open so I can use it to free up my time from contacting breweries one by one and asking simple binary questions to populate online business location profiles.

Pros:

Huge time saver

Cons:

Worried about it being used for telemarketing

This just supports restaurant reservation, haircut appointment & few other use cases, which are highly irrelevant in countries like india, the most prevalent mode of availing such services are walk-ins
