What is the first thing you check every morning, and is it actually the most important thing?

Most mornings I open my laptop and go straight to whichever inbox feels loudest, a client email, a staffing text, an alert from whichever business had a problem yesterday. It is rarely the thing that actually matters most that day, it is just the thing that shouted first.
I started keeping a note of what I checked first for two weeks. Out of ten mornings, the first thing I looked at was the actual priority only three times. The other seven were just noise wearing a priority's clothes.
Curious how this shows up for other people running a business, especially anyone juggling more than one. What is the first thing you check, and does it usually turn out to be the thing that mattered, or just the thing that was loudest?

I used to check messages first thing too, but I realized it was putting me into a reactive mode before I had decided what actually mattered.
Now I try to start with a quick review of my priorities and ask: “What is the one thing that would make today successful if I finished it?” Then I check messages with that context.
The challenge is that urgent things are designed to get attention, while important things often require deliberate focus. Building a habit around reviewing goals first helps create a buffer between other people’s priorities and your own.
