What I Learned Launching CodeYam CLI & Memory on Show HN and Product Hunt

Hey everyone,

Over the past couple of weeks, we launched CodeYam CLI & Memory on both Show HN and Product Hunt. A bunch of founder and maker friends reached out asking how it went, what worked, and what we’d do differently, so I wrote up a more honest reflection than I usually see shared.

A few takeaways:

  • There’s no reliable playbook for a “successful” launch. A lot of advice is directionally helpful, but outcomes still feel pretty stochastic.

  • Distribution tactics matter less than having something people actually care about. When something resonates, it shows up in the comments.

  • It’s easy to get pulled into optimizing for rankings instead of learning. We tried (imperfectly) to stay focused on feedback over leaderboard position.

  • Launching earlier is probably better. Waiting for “perfect” doesn’t necessarily change the outcome as much as you think.

We didn’t use paid promotion or work with a highly active hunter or with agencies, even though that likely might've improved rankings. For us, the goal was to understand whether what we’re building actually resonates with developers using tools like Claude Code, not just to maximize upvotes. We finished our first-ever Product Hunt launch day ranked #17.

If you’re planning a launch on HN or Product Hunt soon, I hope this is helpful.

I wrote up a much more detailed breakdown here:

Would love to hear how others have approached launches and what’s worked (or not worked) for you.
