What are the Product Hunt badges good for? [What is their purpose?]

I never paid much attention to these badges before.

I assume they were part of the original gamification system.

There were several badges to choose from, and you could even earn the same type of badge multiple times.

  • Could someone from the original internal team clarify what exactly they're used for?

  • Do they have any impact on Kitty Points or the weight assigned to our profiles and activity (upvotes, comments, etc.)?

  • And other users: What do you think? What is the purpose of these badges?

Personally, I see badges as at least one indicator that someone might be a real person rather than a bot. After all, a human is more likely to earn a badge for launching a product than a bot is.

For me, it’s some kind of magnet, like a daily streak.

When you see that your actions lead to an achievement, and that your progress is visible somewhere (even within the system), it motivates you to keep going.

And do you know how this progress bar works? =D

Where do you have that progress bar? :D I do not have it on desktop :D

Haha =D When I clicked view all badges, I found it there.

With a very new account myself, I can say how they look from the other side: badges are the first thing I check when a reply makes me wonder if there's a person behind it. A profile with a streak, a couple of badges and a launch reads as human before I've read a word. The Buddy System one is my favourite of the list, replying to new members is exactly the behaviour you'd want to reward, and it's hard to fake at scale. Whether they feed into Kitty Points I have no idea, I'd also love to hear it from the team.

I am so disappointed that I will not have some badges, e.g. veteran one. 😅

They reward activity, create a sense of progress, and give users a reason to keep coming back and using Product Hunt

After some days, very few answers to that question. In my opinion, those badges are not very useful. Perhaps, they try to stimulate traffic but I still do not see they are much interesting. I would like to see more information from the PH team, here.
