The feature that our users asked for the most turned out to be the one they used the least.

For six months the top requested feature on our feedback board was a data export dashboard. We spent four weeks building and polishing that feature. After that feature went live we tracked how users used it. Four percent of the users who explicitly asked for that feature ever clicked on it more, than once. We realized that users did not actually need analytics; they simply wanted reassurance that the tool could handle that feature.

The reassurance point is really interesting to me. A request can be less about wanting a new feature and more about wanting confidence that the product won’t become a limitation later.
