My Product Hunt launch got single digit upvotes. Here's the post mortem.
I launched Invoice Badger here last week. Single digit upvotes, zero signups. Nobody was rude about it, nobody was anything about it, which is worse.
Writing this up because the post mortems I've found useful were always the honest ones, and there are plenty of the other kind.
What I got wrong
I launched to nobody. I made this account and launched days later. No audience, no comment history, no reason for a single person to care that I'd turned up. The product had months of polish on it. The distribution had about a day of thought. That's entirely backwards and I knew it in the abstract without ever acting on it.
The second one is specific to what I built. It's invoicing you drive by talking to your AI, so the good part happens inside a chat window. A gallery of screenshots is a terrible way to show that. I was asking people to imagine the product rather than see it, on a page where they're giving you a second and a half.
What I did instead
Rather than run at it again I moved to channels that don't need an audience.
Published to the Official MCP Registry, which is the upstream several MCP directories ingest from, so one submission propagates to places I'd never get to by hand.
Submitted to the individual directories that do take direct listings.
Wrote real content pages and a blog, so search has something to find in six months when I've stopped thinking about launch day.
Put a small made-with badge on invoices from free accounts, so the product does a little of the work itself.
None of it is exciting. All of it keeps running while I'm not looking at it, which suits how I work better than a launch day ever did.
What's actually changed
Not much yet, and I'd rather say that than write a redemption arc I haven't earned. The registry listing is live, the pages are indexed, the numbers are still small. Ask me in three months.
The one thing that changed today is that I'm here, reading things and replying to them, which is what I should have been doing for a month before I launched anything.
So: if your launch went flat too, what actually moved afterwards? I'm collecting the honest answers rather than the we-hit-number-one ones.
