About

Developer and maker. I build small, useful products, mostly solo and in the open, and I work on AI systems that run unattended in production, where the hard part is knowing when they have quietly stopped. I like tools that get out of your way, so I tend to build the thing I wish existed rather than put up with one that doesn't quite fit.

AI didn't remove your bottleneck. It moved it onto the one person who can't scale.

Throughput per developer is up 33.7%. Median time in code review is up 441.5%. If you're a solo maker, you are the review queue and you quietly stopped showing up for the shift.

There's a report that came out this spring that I keep coming back to, and I don't think it landed properly with makers because it's written for engineering leaders at big companies. Faros AI published "The Acceleration Whiplash" in April two years of telemetry from 22,000 developers across more than 4,000 teams. Not a survey about how developers feel. Actual measurement of what came out the other end.

"Nothing is wrong" and "nothing is running" keep coming out as the same value

I have been commenting on launches here most days since the end of July. One argument has come up in about a dozen of them without me planning it, and twice the maker went and found the same defect in their own code afterwards. That seems worth writing down properly rather than repeating in other people's threads.

The shape is always the same. A system has a value that means healthy. It usually does not have a separate value for "I could not tell". So the second collapses into the first, and it collapses in the direction that looks fine.

Bitwright - Draw fifty sprites that look like one artist made them.

The problem with AI art in a game is never the first image. It is the fiftieth. Every generation is an independent roll, so nothing matches and you cannot build a set. Bitwright never generates an image. The model writes a description and your browser draws it, so a sprite is a named palette plus a stack of parts. Tick "match the open sprite" and the next one inherits that palette, viewpoint and detail. Sprites drawn a week apart belong together. Every part stays editable afterwards.
