Is keeping a free tier actually worth the server and support costs?

Been offering a free plan for two years now, and i still can't decide if it's helping or just wasting time.
It brings in steady word of mouth traffic but free users generate most of our support tickets without ever converting. Paying for servers for people who will never upgrade is starting to feel like a bad trade.
For those who killed their free tier did your revenue actually go up or did signups just dry up?

Haven't killed mine, but one thing I learned: if you lean too hard on "free" in your messaging, you mostly attract people who don't want to pay at all. And if free signups aren't turning into paid, the first thing I'd check is whether the pricing is actually clear on the site. The timing of when free turns into paid matters a lot too.
