I launched twice this year and got 3 upvotes total. Here's what I actually got wrong.
Two launches in 2026:
HalalNear.me (Feb): a halal restaurant directory, 1,700+ verified listings across 8 cities. 3 upvotes. Zero comments.
TelecareHQ (Mar): a telehealth storefront builder. 1 upvote. Zero comments. The page still says "Be the first to comment."
I had done the reading. Real products, decent maker comments, clear problems, launched on weekdays. Both went nowhere.
For a while I assumed the products just weren't good enough. I don't think that's it anymore. Here is what I actually think happened.
1. I treated launch day as the marketing. It should have been the finish line of it.
I showed up with nothing behind me. No list, no audience, nobody who had been following the build. Product Hunt does not create an audience for you, it converts one you already have. I brought zero, so I got roughly zero back. That is not the algorithm being unfair, that is just arithmetic.
2. My Product Hunt account was a ghost.
I joined in 2016 and have a Veteran badge, but I earned 1 karma point in the last year. I had barely commented on anyone else's launch. I showed up asking for attention from a community I had never given anything to.
3. I launched when the product was done, not when I was ready.
Those are two different dates. A finished product tells you nothing about whether anyone is waiting for it.
What I am doing differently:
I am building an employee survey tool and I had the submission form open this week. I stopped. Instead I am giving it six to eight weeks of actually posting about the problem it solves, being useful in here, and building a real audience first. Then I will launch.
What made me stop was opening my own two launch pages and putting the numbers next to the effort I had put in. Worth doing if you are on the fence.
Has anyone here launched genuinely cold and had it work anyway? I would like to be wrong about this.
