Does anyone check usage rights before they try a tool, or only after?
Something I've never been able to work out. When someone tries a generative tool for the first time, does the licensing question come up before they generate anything — or only once they've got an output they actually want to use?
I ask because I had to decide where to put that line, and every option had a cost.
The export screen felt safest. But that's the one moment where the person is happy with what they're looking at, and dropping legal text into it turns a good moment into a form. Rejected.
Terms page only is what most tools do. Nobody reads it, and "it's in the terms" is not an answer to someone deciding whether to spend an afternoon on you. Rejected.
Onboarding meant adding a screen to a flow I'd spent weeks getting down to one step. Rejected on that basis alone.
So it went in the FAQ, which is the option I'm least confident about, because it's the only one that requires the person to already be wondering.
What I can't measure is whether the wondering happens at all. Nobody has ever emailed to ask. That could mean the FAQ is doing its job, or it could mean the question doesn't occur to anyone until much later — in which case I've put the answer in the one place nobody visits twice.
If you've built something where the output gets used commercially: did people ask upfront, or not ask at all?
