Does a solo maker's first launch ever truly compete with a funded team's launch on the same day?
Scrolling through today's launches, noticed a solo dev with under 500 followers sitting right next to a product backed by a known team with thousands of followers ready to vote within the first hour. Same leaderboard, very different starting lines.
Makes me wonder if Product Hunt's ranking genuinely rewards the product, or mostly rewards whoever can mobilize the most people fastest on launch day. A great solo product without a network behind it seems to need a lot more luck, timing, or a lucky external traffic source like YouTube or Reddit picking it up.
how others think about this. Should newer makers avoid launching against bigger funded teams if possible, or does timing not really matter since quality eventually finds its audience anyway?

One data point from the solo side. I launched an invoicing tool here on 29 September with no team and almost no followers: 3 points, one comment, which was my own maker comment, and day rank 139. Who else launched that day never mattered, because there was nothing to compare.
What I would change is not the day. I spent a month before launch writing forum comments here, and the product page still had 2 followers that morning. A comment travels on the followers of whoever started the thread, so it builds a reputation but not a crowd that shows up in the first hour. A funded team does not beat you on the leaderboard so much as arrive with that crowd already assembled.
The useful number came the next day, from the server log rather than the leaderboard: 44 real visitors with the producthunt ref, two reached pricing, two opened the sign-up page, none signed up. Even a quiet launch sends some people. If the page cannot convert 44, a better rank would mostly have told me the same thing faster.
So my answer: dodging a big team on the same day changes little for a newcomer. What changes the outcome is whether the people who will try it exist before launch day, built somewhere you own, and then brought with you.
