Did you know who your user was before you launched?

by

I've been on Product Hunt every day for the past month - and I still can't figure something out.

When I look at new launches, I often don't understand who the product is actually for. And I catch myself thinking "this is probably for someone else" - and moving on.

Is this just me? Or do you also struggle to see yourself in most products you come across?

And if you're a founder - I'm curious which strategy you think works better:

1) Launch with a very narrow, specific use case and test that hypothesis with a defined user from day one?

Or
2) launch broad first - see who the idea resonates with - and then do a second, more focused launch with real use cases and specific users?

Would love to hear from people who've actually tried either approach.
