I don't understand their choice of countries they support first. US has Craigslist; UK, Australia and New Zealand have Gumtree.. wouldn't it be better to choose countries where a solution like this is not already existent? πŸ€”
This is cool because I've used Facebook to purchase/sell items, but I'm not sure everyone wants Marketplace to be a central part of their experience. It has replaced where the Messenger button used to be on iOS, central on the toolbar. I'm surprised that THIS product of all of the ones they've tested made it on the toolbar.
In local small rural farm communities in the Midwest (pop. ~7,000) like my own, Marketplace is another source of revenue for many. Prior to Marketplace, many Facebook groups existed for the same peer-to-peer buy, sell and trade opportunities. The advantage Marketplace has that Facebook groups do not have is the ability to filter your search by keyword ans distance. A huge momentum shifter and improvement from the "buy, sell, trade groups" as they are known locally.
Classic Facebook playbook - Step 1 - Intro new product to users Step 2 - Add businesses if it catches on Step 3 - πŸ’°
