Why can the same-spec diamond cost $7,629 more at another retailer?

Diamond pricing is surprisingly opaque.

Two diamonds with the exact same shape, carat, color, and clarity can be priced thousands of dollars apart depending on where you shop.

I built the Diamond Watcher Price Index to highlight those differences.

Every month, it tracks real listings from retailers like Ritani, Blue Nile, Rare Carat, and Brilliance using a fixed set of diamond specifications. I included some easy to read graphs and charts.

For example, you can compare:

- Prices across retailers

- Natural and lab-grown diamonds

- Round, oval, and cushion shapes

- Carat sizes from 0.5 to 3.0

- Monthly price movements

- The price jumps around major carat milestones

One finding from September surprised me:

- For a 3-carat natural oval diamond, Rare Carat was $7,629 cheaper than Blue Nile for the same specifications.

The data also showed lab-grown diamonds priced 87% below comparable natural diamonds on average.
