Hey PH,
Great to be back again & thanks @__tosh for hunting us!
When we released Deta Space last year, we learned that people resonated with many ideas, but they wanted it to work with their existing stuff on the web.
So we took ideas into Deta Surf, a hybrid between browser, file manager, and AI assistant. It’s designed to put you at the center of everything that’s important to you, so you can get the most out of it.
Surf adds a few things on top of normal tabbed browsing.
💾 Personal storage with Stuff
You can add almost anything that’s important to you, straight into Surf. A Notion document, Tweet, YouTube video, image or PDF.
🪟 Unlimited Desktops
Surf’s core building concept is a “Context”, and every Context has it’s own desktop. Create different desktops for different projects, add your important stuff and link between them.
🦄 Universal Chat
Chat with all the stuff you encounter in Surf. Whether a tab, PDF, image, or entire context — Surf augments whatever it is and lets you verify everything with citations.
You can read more about it in the Verge here: https://www.theverge.com/2024/12...
We’re in alpha, but we’ll be letting a lot of the PH audience in today to give it a spin. Let us know what you think!
@__tosh@xeust Congrats on Surf! Great to see Deta bring its unique aesthetic to the world of browsers. How do you see Universal Chat scaling across file types? Also, could AI auto-organize "Stuff" for smarter workflows? Excited to try it!
@__tosh@tonyabracadabra thank you!
Right now, chat supports web sites, PDFs, images and collections of these things, which we call "contexts". We want to add support for more -- anything you'd like to see?
With regards to auto-organizing, you can already give a Context (like a folder) a prompt, and it will try and automatically fill itself
I'm already a user, and I must say, Deta Surf is truly amazing! It seamlessly integrates browsing, file management, and AI assistance into one intuitive app, making it an essential tool for organizing my digital life. The design is sleek, and the features are incredibly user-friendly. Deta Surf is undoubtedly the future of web browsing, setting a new standard for how we interact with our digital content. Kudos to the Deta team for creating such a fantastic platform that enhances productivity and makes managing digital content a breeze!
I'm a big fan of the fact that we can bring things to surf with us, I think that's an important aspect & arguably a deal-breaker for a browser like this!
Since I'm a big user of Chrome Extensions etc. How does it work regarding those?
Is it possible for me to have add-ons in this browser? Wishing you the best of luck with the launch!
@cranqnow we do not _yet_ support traditional chrome extensions.
With regards to add-ons, we are also working on a Surf-native approach to enhance the websites you are working with

Deta are succeeding in disrupting a previously undisruptable market. For years people have talked about web browsers being able to be - and do - more, but nobody has been able to prove that concept in as succinct and usable a way as Surf does. I've been on the alpha since May, and the team have shown time and again how dedicated they are to this concept. Can't wait to see how it continues to evolve.
@ian_tirta make more people happy! and charge for the cloud specific stuff so we are aligned with the end-users

Finally, a browser that gets how my chaotic brain works! 🧠
Love how it lets me grab anything interesting (screenshots, PDFs, even YouTube clips) and actually helps me find them later. The rectangle select + AI chat is genius - no more copy-pasting chunks of text like a caveman.
Best part? It's all local-first. My data stays with me, and it's blazing fast. Feels like having a smart assistant who actually remembers our conversations!
Perfect for my ADHD-powered research sessions 🚀
