Data Dead Drop provides effortless, secure file sharing. Data self-destroys after access. No browser required - just use your favorite command line client.
Hey there, Product Hunt!
I'm happy to introduce you to Data Dead Drop. 📁
I quit my day job at the end of last year, and finally have the time to do what I've been wanting to do for a long time: Just Build Fun Things. Data Dead Drop is a nifty file-sharing tool that I made to scratch a personal itch of mine. It's simple, secure, and, best of all, completely free. No strings attached.
Here's what makes it stand out a bit:
1️⃣ Anonymity: No sign-ups, no cookies – your privacy is top-notch.
2️⃣ Automation: Designed for the command line junkies; cURL, HTTPie or whatever else. Take your pick.
3️⃣ Security: Diceware algorithm for secure links. And your uploads are fully encrypted.
4️⃣ Self-Destruction: Files vanish after a predefined number of accesses or expire after a short while.
Oh, and everything is open source. Feel free to poke around the code on GitHub. Please give it a spin and let me know what you think! 😊 🙌
Cheers,
Hans
@shivam_tiwari24 Hi, we create Web Operating System with own app store, where users get software from. Your app is amazing and we want to enable you to share it to our users 🙂 Can we talk?
It's great that you've created this @hschne! Is it similar to we transfer?
My suggestion: over explain it. My view is that it focuses on devs but it could also be super useful for regular people. They tend to need further info.
Anyway, this will certainly help keep data safe and secure - kudos to you!
@german_merlo1 Thanks for the suggestions!
I'd say it's quite different from WeTransfer. For one, Data Dead Drop does not support large files, but it's also a lot quicker and simpler to use. No sign-up, no email, and you can even use it without a browser.
Hey Hans! Congrats on quitting your day job and pursuing your passion project! Data Dead Drop sounds intriguing. I'm curious, how did you come up with the idea for a file-sharing tool with anonymity and self-destruction features? It's great that it's open source too. Will definitely check it out! 😊👍
@goyashy Thanks for the kind words!
I needed a quick and simple, yet secure way to share data between machines where I don't have a browser. Everything else just fell into place afterwards 😄
That's a really cool and simple tool!
I tried it, and it worked really well, except the drag & drop did not work - I had to click and upload.
Will you add the possibility of uploading a folder containing several files?
Will you add a UI to show an overview of the uploaded files, allowing the user to see at least the file name and size before downloading it?
And do you plan to allow larger files?
@caros Wow, I don't know how that drag and drop issue slipped through. Thanks for letting me know, I'll fix that ASAP.
I'm considering adding addition features similar to the ones you suggested. Larger files are tricky. As I mentioned in another comment free file-sharing tools tend to attract lots of bad actors. I'm working on figuring out a way to allow larger file uploads without compromising the app.
That's a very cool and straightforward apparatus!
I attempted it, and it worked truly well, but the drag & drop did not work - I had to press and transfer.
Will you include the plausibility of uploading a envelope containing a few records?
Will you include a UI to appear an outline of the transferred records, permitting the client to see at slightest the record title and measure some time recently downloading it?
And do you arrange to permit bigger records?
Impressed with this sleek and user-friendly tool! Tested it out, and the performance was excellent. A valuable resource for ensuring secure file sharing! Great work, @hschne!
@rohan_singhvi1 Thanks for the kind words! I wanted a way to quickly share files between machines where I have nothing but cURL and an internet connection, like when setting up a new Laptop. Then took it from there 😅
Congratulations on the launch of Data Dead Drop! 📁 Quitting your day job to build something you're passionate about is truly inspiring, and it's fantastic to see the result – a nifty, free file-sharing tool.
Congrats Team Data Dead Drop on the successful launch on Producthunt! The idea of secure, efficient file sharing is a need of the hour. Just one suggestion - how about incorporating a feature that would give users a heads-up notification before their data self-destructs? This would give them an additional layer of control and confidence in using the service. Great going!
