If you use Cursor with OpenAI models, what's your plan before the deadline?
@OpenAI is winding down its contract with @Cursor, following Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX.
The two companies have worked together for nearly four years. But OpenAI's contract with Cursor included a clause allowing cancellation after a change of ownership, and they're using it. They have all the right to do so.
The access is set to end November 12, the latest date their contract permitted, giving developers as much notice as possible.
The reasoning goes back further than this deal. After Musk acquired @Twitter, the company broke terms of its existing contract with OpenAI. And earlier this year, Musk admitted under oath that xAI had used OpenAI's data in violation of its terms of service.
With SpaceX now owning Cursor, OpenAI says it can't be confident the same terms would be respected going forward.
OpenAI has been clear that this isn't about Cursor's product or team, calling the decision "incredibly tough" and noting their respect for what Cursor has built.
The developers who rely on OpenAI models inside Cursor are the ones most affected, and now have until November to plan around the change.

My hope is that OpenAI will tweak Codex so it become more like Cursor to use

This matters to me personally. I started building my app, RiiS, with Cursor, and it has played an important role throughout the development process.
Recently, I’ve been using Cursor and Claude Code in parallel, so my plan is to continue that way for now while gradually reducing my dependence on any single tool or model provider. Before November, I’ll test whether I can move my full workflow to Claude Code or another environment without losing too much productivity.
I haven’t made a final decision yet, though. I’m curious to hear what other non-technical founders and solo builders are planning to do.
Anyway, Composer, Grok and Opus are too good; I don't need GPT.

Personally, I mostly use Anthropic models now as they feel faster and cleaner for my workflow. I still use OpenAI models to review and validate another model’s work, so losing them in Cursor would be unfortunate.
That said, Grok and Composer are solid for coding, Opus is excellent for reasoning, and I still think Cursor’s real advantage is the workflow around the models, not any single model.
