Building an app that tells callers you're asleep — launching tomorrow

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm launching "Connections – Sleep Mode" tomorrow, and wanted to share the story behind it here first.

It started from a simple annoyance: my phone rang and woke me up for something that could've waited. I realized the real problem isn't the call itself — it's that callers have no way of knowing you're asleep, so we all keep our ringers on "just in case."

Sleep Mode fixes that. Set your sleep hours, and if someone calls during that window, they automatically get a text: "Hey, I'm asleep right now. Call again if it's urgent, otherwise I'll call you back." If they call again, no repeat message — treated as genuinely urgent, and it rings through normally.

A bit of context: I had zero Android development experience before this. Built it from scratch using Claude (Anthropic's AI) as a coding partner, and hit some real manufacturer restrictions along the way (Android's official call-screening permission is blocked on vivo and Xiaomi phones) — had to find a workaround using a different technical approach entirely.

It's open source on GitHub, and launching on Product Hunt tomorrow.

Would love to hear: has anyone tackled a similar problem before? Any features you'd want to see in something like this?
