What’s your biggest email deliverability pain point?
Email validation without SMTP verification usually struggles with accuracy, which can limit its usefulness for real buyers. While building and running an email validation service myself, SMTP checks turned out to be the biggest factor in reducing false positives and improving trust in the results and it cannot just be an optional add-on.
@kliga SMTP verification is definitely the most powerful step since it helps confirm whether a mailbox actually exists. What I meant by it being an optional add-on is that Cleanmails first removes the obvious bad emails like syntax errors, disposable addresses, and domains without MX records.
Once the list is already partially cleaned, users can then choose to run SMTP verification on the smaller, higher-quality subset. This approach helps reduce unnecessary SMTP calls and lowers the risk of IP blocks, while still getting the accuracy benefits where it matters most.

not a bad idea, however you'll get your IP blocked very very fast, especially tring to use the SMTP handshaking.
I would not risk running this on any of my infrastructure.
And know this after being in email business for 15 years.

@alxrda Totally fair point, and I really appreciate you sharing this from your experience. IP blocking is definitely a risk if SMTP handshaking isn’t handled carefully.
SMTP verification is an addon, and when someone performs a basic check it doesn’t include SMTP handshaking. Only after that does the user have the option to opt in to SMTP handshaking if they choose.
The idea behind Cleanmails is to give users control and flexibility. In many cases, running it on a separate VPS with dedicated or extra IPs can still be cheaper than paying per-email fees at scale, though it does require some understanding of deliverability.
