Aspen — Own your intelligence - ChatGPT-style AI that runs on your desktop + phone. Free.

by
Open source AI can be hard to set up. Aspen fixes that. Download one app (Mac, Windows, iPhone), open it, and Aspen detects your hardware, recommends a model, and gets you chatting in minutes. No command line, no config. Models run locally on Ollama, but you don't need to know/care about that. You own all your data, but Aspen is way more than a wrapper: built-in tools, live code artifacts, voice chat, file uploads, and an OpenAI-compatible API to plug into Cursor or Zapier. Free forever.

Hey Product Hunt 👋 I wrote Aspen because I truly believe no one company should own so much data, personal, professional, health, financials, kids, and everything in between, and get to use it as they see fit, especially as companies' values change, leadership shifts, and the emphasis on revenue continues. Misuse of data isn't a maybe. It's a matter of time. Aspen lets you own your own intelligence. I built it to genuinely democratize AI for everyone, not just developers. I really believe that just like every home has a PC or a Mac, and an iPhone or Android, every home should have its own local AI. Most of what we actually do day to day can run on local AI, which not only saves you the subscription cost, but more importantly keeps your private data private and keeps you in control of your own narrative. And to be clear, this is not a wrapper. The best open models (Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral) run underneath via Ollama, but the reason most people never touch them is that it means terminals, GPU configs, and a lost weekend. Aspen is everything I built on top so a busy, non-technical person can just open an app and go: -- One-click install on Mac and Windows and a free companion iPhone app. Aspen auto-detects your hardware and picks the right model for you -- Live code artifacts with a real preview panel. Build a working webpage and watch it render side by side, like a local coding assistant -- Vision. Drop in a screenshot or photo and your local model reads it -- Reach it from anywhere. Aspen generates a secure HTTPS URL so you can use your home AI from your phone -- OpenAI-compatible API. Point Cursor, Zapier, or your own scripts at your private AI by changing two lines of code -- It maintains itself. Models and security updates apply automatically, with one-tap rollback if you don't like an update The desktop and mobile apps are free. And the part I'm most excited about: a dedicated Aspen device, silent, always-on, air-gapped, sitting in your home, running large models locally so your intelligence is always available and never leaves the box. That's the real vision. An Aspen in every home. Personal intelligence that's actually yours. Especially as homes and lives get more AI-fied with robots, vision, sensors, and of course more software, your data stays with you.
