I feel your pain. I purchased a $21 item from the US, paid $12 for shipping, $1 for duty, $10 for Canada Post's customs brokerage fee to collect the duty and $0.50 in foreign transaction fees. I have a US mailbox now, but it is still a pain to wait a few months to have enough stuff in order to warrant a trip across the border.
I hear ya, i have just slowly stopped ordering from the US. Either wait or just pay the premium for local.
