Unit 7 is a free, self-hosted control room for your servers, Coolify apps, domains, databases and backups. Talk to it in plain words, or let Claude Code or Cursor use it over MCP. It does the work on your real servers and asks before anything risky. Your keys stay encrypted on your machine, and the AI only sees a reference. One button checks that everything is OK, with no AI. Backups go off the server and get test-restored. Open source, Apache 2.0. Early, so expect rough edges.

This is my first open source project. If you find it useful or if you have any suggestions, I'm open to it.
Hi everyone, I'm the maker of Unit 7.
I build with AI coding agents. The code shows up in minutes. Then the evening goes on everything after it: the VPS, the Coolify stacks, DNS spread over three providers, backups I only hoped worked, the port I forgot was open.
So I built the backend developer my agent never had. You say what you want, like "why is prod slow?" or "point app.example.com at production", and it does the work on your real servers.
What it does today:
- Is everything OK? One button, no AI. It tells you if there's room, if your data is safe, if anything is open and if your app is behaving.
- Backups. Important data gets copied off the server, then test-restored.
- Your AI, with brakes. Claude Code, Cursor and Codex can use it over MCP. Every action goes through one gate, and anything risky waits for you.
- Your keys. They stay encrypted on your machine. The AI only ever sees a reference.
- Proof of fixes. A problem becomes a prompt for your AI. After your next deploy, Unit 7 reads the same numbers and says Fixed or Still happening.
The first real run showed me why this matters. All three of my Supabase databases failed their test restore, with two tables coming back empty. I'd rather find that on a Friday morning than on the worst day of the year.
What it can't do yet, so you don't find out the hard way:
- It needs root or passwordless sudo on your server. Scoped access isn't built.
- On a Mac, it stops watching when the Mac sleeps, unless you add the small Outpost script.
- It's strongest on your own servers and Coolify. Putting new sites on hosted platforms is still in testing.
- Seven, its always-on agent, is in testing too.
It's free, self-hosted and Apache 2.0. There's no account and no telemetry. I built it with heavy use of AI coding tools, and I review and own what ships.
Two questions for you: what's the first job you'd hand it, and what would stop you giving it access to your server?
